Grey, rain-soaked clouds hang, thick and thunderous,
like dark veils in weary skies far above
the lush green majesty of the Wicklow Mountains
The crowded bus rocks on dirty wheels, speeding
along the tiny dirt road that snakes and curls
around ancient trees and empty stone churches
The Glen of the Two Lakes appears, cradling
the abandoned monastery, its pristine water
circled by craggy rocks and broken trails.
Its venerable history lost to the multitude
of pilgrims flocking, praying among ruins
and crumbling headstones below the round tower.
Grasping at fragile faith, the modern world intrudes,
profaning the sacred graves of forgotten
Saints and Sinners and The Unknown.
