Clandestine

We crept in darkness under pine-needled trees,
through stinging nettles and barbed wire to
lay upon the Irish soil in some stranger’s field
as a light mist fell and the grass stained our skin.
It was so cold, my lips gave birth to tiny clouds
with each exhale until you caught them with a kiss.
The texture of soggy earth was a soothing balm
on the still fresh scars of my tortured memory.
A brief amnesty granted for the anarchic love
that grew a bridge across an ocean of stars.
